I usually force my defender one way, arm length away, hands at the chest and up, if I force them left then my left foot is on their high foot so they'll have to go left. What am I doing wrong?
Also post your defensive tips.

Anytime you give the offense a high leg, they will attack it. Therefore if you're forcing the offense left, the smart players will attack your high foot & drive right. Defense is very individual, you need to read the offense and figure out where his weaknesses are, and then try to limit his options to those weaknesses.

Exactly!! But the coaches at the summer workouts really want us to force baseline. It really makes me mad. But they really want us to cover their high foot so I guess I could do that and as soon as they attack I'll just slide hard & quick

Oh, if it's a team concept that's different. My high school team also ran man-to-man, playing high leg and forcing baseline. The difference is that the our defense was designed to have a help defender trap on the baseline. This means that you can play aggressively high-leg without worrying about giving up baseline. Totally different to forcing baseline in a 1v1 situation.

For defensive tips here's some a coach gave to me defense is about desire, desire and desire. You have to want to just play tough defense. Tough defense is about keeping the ball I front of you NOT stealing the ball. Not fouling the offensive man and getting away with it but keeping him in front of you and making him make a bad decision or take a tough shot. He is going to hit a few of those tough shots but sooner or later he is going to miss a group of them and that is when you succeed. You need to just learn to be a guy who just sits and waits on defense. You take no chances. you take no gambles. You just wait your time. You are steady. You play with your feet. You watch the midsection of the offense. You never jump at shot fakes. You contest with hands high and use a boxer step to close out. Boxer step is like the step that a boxer uses to throw a punch. Don't over commit with your feet or the lean of your body. You react to the offensive with the same amount of movement that he uses. He takes a half step you take a half step. He goes wide you go slightly wide. the key is to learn how close to get to the offense and how much ground you need to be able to recover. And when you recover you don't still play defense and run beside the offense but you turn you hips and straight up out sprint the offense to the next stop and cut him off and break back down in to your stance. Defense is about breaking your tail off every play. You rest on offense you are all out on defense. Off ball you always have your head on a swivel. You are always talking. YOu are always in a position to help. You are always moving. You are not caught in a place to be pushed and shove match with each other. It is not a dance. You want to hold each other go to the prom.
